Marked Men: The Meaning of Prison Tats

You’ve seen them in countless movies, heck you’ve even witnessed Michael Scoefield use them to escape in Prison Break. Prison-made tattoos are a form of communication for inmates, and telling each other about gang affiliations, prison status, family bonds, and spiritual beliefs.

Here are some shots from a collection by Peter Wollheim.

With tattoos dating back to age 13, this inmate was working toward a “full shirt” of tattoos — chest, back and arms fully tattooed. The Harley-Davidson Evolution motorcycle commemorates the beloved, customized bike his ex-wife sold in their divorce.

This 24-year-old inmate got his small teardrop tattoo at age 15 and says it means “somebody’s mother doesn’t have a son anymore.” The dragon and demon emerging from slits rendered in his chest (left and right) are common prison tattoos and generally represent the wearer’s evil nature breaking out and causing harm.

Nazis in Colour

Here is a fascinating collection fished from a Life Magazine archive of old Pre-WWII Nazi photos. Apart from the charismatic Hitler and the masses that thronged to see him, it’s amazing how prevalent the Nazi symbol was. Those giant flags were designed the party’s chief architect Albert Speer who constructed a number of structures, including the Zeppelinfeld stadium in Nuremberg where the party rallies were held.

Timeless Garden: Tells Time, Powered by Mud

It’s estimated that of the 50-million batteries used every year in South Africa, 95% is the non-rechargeable throw-away kind. That make up 2500 tonnes ending up in our landfills, corroding and exposing harmful chemicals into the environment. So it’s always refreshing to find electronic gadgets are designed with green in mind, even if the idea is more symbolic that anything else.

Designed by Francesco Castiglione and Tommaso Ceschi, Timeless Garden is a combination of a house plant and a clock. You plant your favourite herb or grass in the device, and the chemical reaction between the mud used for the plantation and the metal in the device creates enough electricity to sustain the clock. The body of the clock is made from recycled plastic. Too small to be significant, the grass will also extract a tiny amount of carbon from the air and release an equally small amount of oxygen.

In this type of situation the law states that you must physically protect yourself from robbers within the confines of the home. Porter killed the burglar outside his house and is summarily arrested and charged with second degree murder. To avoid the mandatory 15-year life sentence, Porter reluctantly accepts a deal from the district attorney and is sentenced to three years in prison for involuntary manslaughter.

The Invisible World

This interesting video is an excerpt from the documentary “The Invisible World.” Through the use of scanning electron microscopes [SEM], it shows an amazing world of microscopic organisms living on the surface of our bodies. Each of us is the keeper of a huge invisible zoo, and some of the creatures are permanent exhibits. At any given time there are as many creatures on our body as there are people on earth.

Cross Stitch Just (Un)Like Granma’s

I haven’t even thought about cross stitch since I was forced to do it in home economics class in grade 5. It was torture – stitching horrible little patterns and flowers on to something that was supposed to make a bag for me to keep (you guessed it) cross stitch needles and stuff in – Super yay!

However I came across something on Neatorama that has changed my mind. There’s this cool chick called Shanna from Minneapolis, USA, and she does the kind of cross stitch I can appreciate.
