“Clash of the Titans”

Yes another remake, but this time a classic that needed one.

It’s based on the Greek myth of Perseus, the son of Zeus and a mortal. He goes on a legendary journey, to stop Hades from seizing power from Zeus, and unleashing hell on earth. On his journey defeating the Gorgon Medusa and riding a winged horse.

I remember watching the 1981 classic as a kid (still shown on TCM), with Harry Hamlin in the title role, and being amazed at the special effects. The winged horse, the gorgon, the skeleton army….fantastic stuff. Now however it’s dated and the acting is cringe inducing.

Enter Louis Leterrier, the director who helped reboot the Hulk, with his re-imagining of this classic. This time, with Sam “I’m the next action hero” Worthington playing Perseus; Liam Neeson, and Ralph Fiennes are also onboard playing mighty Zeus and Hades respectively. If Louis’ previous films, The Transporter 1 & 2, The Incredible Hulk, are anything to go by he knows how to direct action films. And if the trailer is anything to go by, this is definitely an action film. The big plus for me, it has a great cast and newcomer Worthington has shown he can act while kicking ass.

And here are some promotional images.

Clash of the Titans is set for international release on 26 March 2010.

City Bowl Mizers: Cancun

I’m waiting to be picked up. Nothing sleazy mind you, I’ve got no goods to offer. Whilst I sit patiently for my ride to arrive, I stumbled upon the City Bowl Mizers.

Let’s call it November ‘04, when the Mizers first made the conscious decision to pick up guitars, write some catchy songs, tan, get haircuts, perfect dance moves, buy sweet shoes, – just look good, in general – and use the aforementioned tools to encourage the music loving youth of today to move their feet and turn their frowns.

In the video for their single “Cancun”, the Durbanites are having a sugar-high, poolside partay. The catchy sound totally put a smile on my face. Check it out below.

Catch up with the fun-loving City Bowl Mizers on their MySpace page.

Win a Copy of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2

Fayyaad over at Utter Insanity just sent me a mail that may or may not be of interest to you. I thought I’d post it anyways because it’s “be nice to work colleagues” month – a self-enforced ritual that occurs only once in three years.

Now, to celebrate yesterday’s launch of Infinity Ward’s universally acclaimed shooter, the dudes at Afrogamer (the African arm of the Eurogamer Network) are giving away a copy of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.

The competition entails a little more leg-work than the ones here on Onelargeprawn, but Modern Warefare 2 is one of the most anticipated game of 2009, so if you want to get your hands on it you’ll need to do a fair bit of reconnaissance ;-)

The full briefing can be found at Afrogamer. Tell them prawny sent you. Good luck.

Drench: The World’s Simplest Flash Game

Dubbed as the “world’s simplest flash game” Drench tasks you turning a board containing a myriad of colours to a single colour within a set number of moves. The premise is a simple one, but the execution may not necessarily be that easy.

When the game starts, the board is filled with random blocks consisting six different colors. Begin at the upper left block, select one of the colours on the right panel to match surrounding blocks. Repeat the process until the whole board is covered with paint of one colour. The first level gives you 30 moves, and in each subsequent level you get one less move.

Play Drench and let us know how you got on.

Another Cracking “Sherlock Holmes” Trailer

After the first trailer for Guy Ritchie’s upcoming action-adventure Sherlock Holmes, our very own Lucy Furr felt a tad weird about this re-imagining of England’s finest detective. Being of a simpler mind, I thought it was flippin’ fantastic, and from the looks of the latest trailer, it’s going to be a jolly good show indeed.

There’s a fair amount of rollicking action thrown in there, Irene Adler looks tasty, and Watson and Holmes share some intimate, Bromance moments. Have a look at the trailer below or watch it in HD at YouTube.

Sherlock Holmes stars Robert Downey Jr., Jude Law, and Rachel McAdams. The movie will hit U.S. theatres on December 25th, 2009. It will reportedly air in South African movie houses on January 8th 1st, 2010.

The Matrix as a Silent Movie

Russian comedy troupe “Bolshaya Raznitsa” (translation: Big Difference) wonders what the The Matrix would be like if it was produced in the silent film era. In this pre-make, Charlie Chaplin is The One. It’s weirdly hilarious. Check it out.

Beautiful Sand Animation by Kseniya Simonova

The words, they escape me. To describe Kseniya Simonova’s art as amazing is an understatement. Simonova won this year’s Ukraine’s Got Talent! show with a dramatic and beautiful sand animation that tells the story of her nation’s painful history during World War II. Her emotionally-charged piece moved the audience to tears.

Unfortunately I can’t understand the symbolism nor the lyrics to the music, but it certainly moved me in other ways. Have a look for yourself.

The 24-year old sand animator from Evpatoria has used her $1,000,000 Ukraninan Hryvnia prize to buy a house and to set up a children’s charity.

OFFLINE: A Gritty Sci-Fi Short by Matthew Santoro

It’s not been the best week. Aside from my PS3 refusing to read discs, I also had to replace two tyres on the car. We’ve also had, and to some extent are still experiencing DNS issues with the blog – some of our visitors are being greeted with the dreaded “Account Suspended” page, and if you visit via RSS, it seems our feed is broken as well. Please accept our apologies, but ultimately it’s out of our hands. Our ISP seems to have updated its DNS (finally!) but you may have to wait til yours gets its act together.

And now after that terrible intro, have a look at this trailer for a short film by Matthew Santoro, a senior visual effects artist whose work can be seen in big budget flicks such as X-Men Origins: Wolverine, 300, and The Incredible Hulk.

With virtually no budget, Santoro’s short film, O F F L I N E, is basically a one-man production and took almost two years to make. Santoro directed, edit, animated, and composed the film; he even built the costumes and props, and his actors doubled as crew. The trailer is 3 minutes of sheer sci-fi awesomeness. Check it out.

Santoro is currently in talks to create a feature length film based in the same world.
