I can just feel the joy of Atari fans going apoplectic. A pioneer in arcades games, Atari has recently revamped its website and added a new section with with a handful of their classic games for you to play (for free) in your web browser. And yes, they have included the beloved Asteroids and Lunar Lander. Along with each faithful recreation, a online leaderboard allows you to submit your scores.
I think I am in love. The more time I spend on Michæl Paukner’s Flickr stream, the more I am drawn into his visual style. He creates a selection of posters and infographics that seem marry science and design in the most beautiful ways. He illustrates some heady, complex stuff that I certainly don’t understand, like the Dymaxion Map and the Antikythera mechanism, they’re all so fantastic to look at.
Aside from winning the lottery and nicking a few gold bars from the national reserve, robbing a bank is definitely part of my get-rich-quick scheme. One of the stumbling blocks comes in handing over the ultimatum to my victims – having seen so may witty deliveries in the movies, I’m afraid I won’t be as powerful – what if I get my tenses wrong? Or put the emphasis on the wrong syllable? Heaven forbid I dish out the order in the squeaky voice that I talk to the cats with. I should probably stick to writing a demand note…
Bank Notes 365 seeks to capture the notes used in actual bank robberies. From the verbose to the succinct, from the geniuses that got away to the fools who got caught, each note is accompanied by data related to that robbery. Have a look at some of them after the jump.
Our Boxhead/Modern Warfare 2 competition has come to an end and you’re mere seconds away from finding out who the winner is. At the beginning of last week, we asked you to play Sean Cooper’s most addictive isometric shooter, Boxhead: The Zombie Wars, and submit your scores to our leader-board. The top scorer at the end of the competition would win a copy of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 on the system of their choice and a MW2-branded wallet.
Many zombie lives were lost in the making of this competition. We’ve had 200 score submissions so a big thanks to all our entrants for the blood, sweat, and tears they spilled on the killing fields. It’s now time to see whose effort reigned supreme. There can only be one winner so hit the jump to find out who it is!
It’s Friday and thanks to the headache pills I took earlier, I’m actually in a good mood. It’s sunny in Cape Town, Assassin’s Creed II launches today, and we’re having a vegan for dinner. What could make this day better – the bear cavalry perhaps? No, much better in fact – hot chicks in bikinis, bearing arms, and riding wolves.
“Hot Chicks on Wolves” is a creation of Aled Lewis, a graphic designer from London, England. See the full image and more of his work after the jump.
Ok here’s the thing, I love beat-em up games. Ever since high school, dropping over a hundred rand at the arcades, then fighting at home on the ever-changing video game systems. It was then that I could not wait to see them on the big screen and see my favourite characters duke it out. However what we didn’t realise is that Hollywood really had no clue in how to transfer these games to the big screen.
Street Fighter was a utter failure both financially and critically (just look at Ryu & Ken). Then came Mortal Kombat, and if I’m to be honest it was on the mark, but that Goro fight with Cage was horrible. And they kept on murdering more.
But out of all the major beat-em ups, only one seemed to have been left untouched. And now, unfortunately, they have gotten their grubby hands on it. SNK’s “King Of Fighters” has made it to the big screen. Oh the humanity.
“The King of Fighters movie will introduce a new science fiction spin into the setting established in the games’ universe by following the surviving members of three legendary fighting clans who are continually whisked away to other dimensions by an evil power,” says insider blog Movieset.
“As the fighters enter each new world they battle that universe’s native defenders, while the force that brought them seeks to find a way to invade and infect our world.”
Just from this sneak preview alone, they have not found a cast that truly encompasses or even looks like the characters. They have messed with the storyline as usual (because audiences of course won’t identify with videogame storylines) and they have the obligatory all American white kid playing the Japanese title role. I sound upset, bitter even and I am. But take a look and tell me I’m wrong.
We have featured South African artist Jaco Haasbroek once or twice before, and in his latest project, he takes the popular rebus created by Milton Glaser and has some fun with it. It’s cute, clever, and typically Haasbroek.
Have a look at his “I HEART” series after the jump.
We’re midway through our Boxhead/Modern Warfare 2 competition, and I thought it would be nice to update you on the standings. Crazy Monkey Games dropped me a mail with the high scores for the “1lp_” users. The numbers are from yesterday, November 18th, around 2:00pm (SA time) – scores may have changed, but it’ll give you a rough idea of our leader-board.
Boxhead: The Zombie Wars Top 3 Scores
1lp_squirrely 1 902 210 500
1lp_Stavey 1 394 780 900
1lp_Stavey 676 342 300
One part Terminator, one part Harry Houdini, 1lp_squirrley is the bad-ass currently in top spot with staggering score of 1 902 210 500! The other contender, 1lp_Stavey, is in striking distance. Clearly these two players know which end of the gun the bullets come out of.
If you want to take home a copy of Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 and a MW2-branded wallet, you just need to top our leader-board, and you have until midnight (SA time) on Sunday, November 22nd to do so. If you’re new to this competition, you can find the full details HERE. Good luck!
VIDEOGIOCO is unusual and violently so. Conceived by Donato Sansone, VIDEOGIOCO combines doodling with stop-motion filming to create something quite unique, and so very odd. It has a killer ending, which also happens to be its beginning. Have a look below.
Capetonian singer-songwriter Joshua Grierson’s offerings are simple and soulful, melancholy and beautiful. His influences are some of my very favourite musicians like Bobby D and Tom Waits, so how could I not love his bluesy/folksy music.
This 25-year-old journeyman certainly has some great guitar skills and we look forward to catching him live sometime (you might have been lucky enough to see him in Jozi and Pretoria earlier this month). In the meantime you can check out one of his recent track here – it’s a live recording of Joshua performing, impromptu, at The Waiting Room above Royale on Long Street.
