It’s all in the Muti!

TGIF. And none too sooner, I’m running on fumes. Whilst the FIFA World Cup madness is going to be happening down in Long Street, I’ll be heading in the opposite direction, up Kloof Street to AFRIKA!

A collaboration between Muti Clothing and designer studio Am I Collective, AFRIKA! is a range of tees inspired the dark continent which we call home. The peeps over at Groundglass created a catchy viral spot for the launch. Check it out below.

The event starts at 6:30pm tonight at The Garage, 8 Kloof Street. See you there.

Back to Basics: A Collection of Fixed Gear Bikes

Year-end slowdown, my brown ass! I’m the busiest I have even been at the office. I half-considered calling reception with a bomb scare, but apparently one can get arrested for this kind of thing. Who knew?

I also didn’t know what a fixed gear bicycle was until that guy Uno De Waal from 10and5.com explained it to me. A “Fixie” is a bike that has been pared down to its simplest form – devoid of gears, it’s a single-speed bike without a freewheel. Because the pedals are always in motion when it is moving, you cannot coast on a fixie. This could prove problematic to some people (me included) who want to freewheel as much as they can through life.

Why would anyone want such a thing? Apart from being excellent exercise, it’s a far cleaner mode of transport. Oh, and they are pretty to look at. See a small collection of them after the jump.

Nice Parking Ass-Bag

I got sent these images in the mail by @AmyJane0 and had a good chuckle. I think we have all fallen victim to this at some time or another, so it’s easily identifiable – some jagweed has parked so close to you that you practically need a can opener to get out of your spot. I don’t get too upset by this, but LucyFurr just wants to rid the world of these mouth breathers in the most heinous way possible. Clearly the people who left these notes are on the same wavelength – it’s passive-aggressive minus the passive!

Check out some of the bad parking “thank you” notes after the jump.

World AIDS Day 2009

I know I come across as a misanthrope because I am one, but I wouldn’t wish HIV or AIDS on my least favourite people (not going to mention names because I just don’t have the money to hire a good lawyer right now and the list would take up loads of space and you’d get bored and probably scared reading it). So peeps please practice safe sex on World AIDS Day and everyday – it’s really not that difficult. Oh and for those smart arses reading this, I know that HIV can be spread other ways, but unprotected sex is the most common way it’s transferred.

On a related note, Prawn and I were at the Ocean View police station last night – long story – and I was really pleased to see that they had loads of free condoms and femidoms prominently displayed right next to the front desk. I couldn’t resist snapping a photo of a rather amusing visual pun created by the profilactics and the station’s notice board, check it … after the jump.

The Western Nostril

I honestly have no idea how I came about this, but a Google blog search led me to Moral Fibre so they’ll get the hat tip for this one.

The Western Nostril is a home-grown comic strip produced by brothers Alex Latimer and Patrick Latimer. I would tell you more about it but rumour is that a great selection of free fried food is available in our staff canteen, and if you know me, you’ll know that food comes before anything. So I’ll just say The Western Nostril is clever and quirky in both its humour and visual style, and that you should have a look at some of comics after the jump.

This Man Crumbles Before Your Very Eyes

I don’t know what part of the world you’re from, but nothing quite says Friday to me than men crumbling to pieces for my sheer enjoyment.

The video and website form the corporate campaign of Acconia, which according to its website is a world leader in the renewable energy sector, capable of demonstrating the technical and economic viability of a new energy model based on (the) criteria of sustainability.

Edit: I had intended to finish this post off before I left the office on Friday but promptly forgot, so here’s your opportunity to shine. Insert witty closing statement here.

Emo Super Heroes

What do emo kids use as birth control? Their personalities. Clearly I didn’t write that joke, it’s actually funny. It however shows the extent of my knowledge on all things “emo”.

Now, artist JSalvador wondered what super heroes would be like if they were emo and sketched our their tortured thoughts. Check out his “Super Emo Friends” series after the jump.

Looping Around The House

It’s Friday and my urge to work is as tenuous as the link between masturbating and hairy palms.

I am on the search for awesomeness and stumbled upon Simon Panrucker mucking about in his parent’s house. You’d think that is hardly worth mentioning but he has created a pretty cool tune by looping different noises he made around the house. Check it out below.

Epic Matrix Bullet-Dodging Scene, Now in LEGO!

To celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Wachowski brothers epic effort, The Matrix, Trevor Boyd and Steve Ilett re-created the famous bullet-dodging scene using the medium of LEGO. That’s pure win in itself, but made even better by the fact that the two gents spent 440 hours to make their stop-frame animation frame-accurate.

By “frame accurate” we mean that we took all of the video frames from that part of the movie (that’s nearly 900 frames for just 44 seconds of footage) and reproduced them all in Lego.

Have a look at the clip below.

And hit the jump to see a side-by-side comparison of the original and the LEGO version.

Amazing Art by Aesthetic Apparatus

Some months, we went to a screen printing workshop and had a fantastic time. Since then I have been yearning to turn a room in our basement into a workshop. Trouble is, the room is filled to the brim with the crap that can’t fit in the house above it. Also, it’s inhabited by the bane of my existence – FLEAS. Tonnes of fleas. I hate them, in a “fuck off and die” kind of way.

Anyhoo (people still say anyhoo right?), if the workshop became a reality, I wondered what kinds of unoriginal, mindless content I would likely produce. I need guidance and inspiration, and who better to get that from than screen printing gurus Aesthetic Apparatus.

Formed by beer-loving designers Dan Ibarra and Michael Byzewski, Aesthetic Apparatus has been creating the most awesome hand-printed concert posters and art prints since 1999. But don’t just believe me – have a look at a small selection after the jump.
