The Bitter*Girls is the work of Japanese photographer Jyune who uses tilt-shift photography to take real scenes and transform them to look like miniature models. Whilst there may be a glut of such tilt-shift photos on the Interwebs, the micro-worlds created by Jyune somehow look more charming to me. Check out a small gallery below.

If there was a ever a festival I wanted to be a part of, it would have to be Holi. Also called the Festival of Colours, Holi is a popular Hindu festival that is celebrated on the last full moon day of the lunar month Phalguna, which usually falls in early March.
In a welcome to spring and the triumph of good over evil, people lose their inhibitions and get together for what looks like a massive water fight in the street, playfully throwing coloured paint, water, and powder at each other. Here are some striking images by Indian photojournalist and documentary photographer, Poras Chaudhary.

YouTube Goes 3D
This past weekend, I went to watch Ice Age 3 in 3D at a local cinema. Not a drop of alcohol had touched my lips that day so the movie was mediocre at best.I wasn’t completely wowed by the 3D effects either BUT I did keep the 3D glasses because I look hot in them there might come a time when YouTube goes 3D. I said that as a joke but it turns out that the video sharing site is doing just that. For realsies.
For each 3D video, you’ll note a View Style drop-down list with different options for the glasses you might have. If you don’t happen to possess a pair of 3D glasses, you can select the cross-eyed option for example, and then squint you eyes to achieve the desired effect. Apparently some people can get it right, others are just spastic at it.
At this minute the 3D videos can’t be embedded so you’ll need to go directly to YouTube to view them, so try this. Maybe this. And possibly this. Did I mention this? ;-)

Pieter Hugo in Nollywood
The last time we featured South African photographer Pieter Hugo, he was hanging out with the Gadawan Kura or ‘hyena handlers’, a group of minstrels who wander the towns of Nigeria, entertaining people and selling traditional medicines. It seems he has returned to Nigeria to explore yet another facet – the phenomenon that is Nollywood.
The film industry in Nigeria has become the second largest in the world, ahead of Hollywood and behind Bollywood. Shot on location all over Nigeria, a staggering 200 videos are released onto the home video market every month!
In Hugo’s latest series, he explores the Nigerian tradition of story-telling by asking a team of actors and assistants to recreate Nollywood myths and symbols as if they were on movie sets.
His vision of the film industry’s interpretation of the world results in a gallery of hallucinatory and unsettling images.
The tableaux of the series depict situations clearly surreal but that could be real on a set; furthermore, they are rooted in the local symbolic imaginary. The boundaries between documentary and fiction become very fluid, and we are left wondering whether our perceptions of the real world are indeed real.

I may not know a whole lot about art, but I’d like to think I have a decent gauge on the funny stuff. And I’ve just found something new that marries the two quite well.
That’s Not Art takes the pieces of “art” that people post to Tumblr and takes a good stab at them. It’s delightfully written. Have a look at a few of them below.

Does the person you wrote this to have a farm and an electrical plant and the ability to regurgitate fresh water? Because otherwise you’re going to starve to death and be thirsty until you die. Suggestion for a more accurate wording: “You’re the only person I need.” Even then it’s not technically true, but at least it’s not as ludicrous. After all, air is pretty useful.

Everyone knows true happiness is KEEPING it. Unless you literally mean that tiny shell in your hand. In that case, yes, we agree, get rid of it. Holding onto little trinkets like that can easily fill your house with garbage. Then true happiness becomes just making it one weekend without your wife asking you to clean out the garage.

This just seems pointless on every level, not to mention the insanely low quality of the image used. “I love love” is about as useful as writing, “I enjoy enjoyment” or “Fun is fun.” Nice handwriting, too. Perhaps instead of wasting time loving love, you should start trying to love penmanship.

The world is in disrepair and a handyman is sorely needed. Enter German artist Jan Vormann who started Dispatchwork, an ongoing project that seeks to restore distressed architecture by using colourful little toy bricks to fill in the cracks. His project started out in Italy and has taken him to Israel, Holland, and to Berlin where he, with help from the local community, filled in World War II bullet holes at a building of the Humbold University.
During an interview with Halogen Life when asked about how long he’d be continuing with the project, Vormann had this to say.
I want to “repair” every broken wall in the whole world with Dispatchwork. Why not? I think it is a fun approach towards conceiving the decay that time brings along. Also it leaves a positive imprint in people’s mind. As long as kids play, adults will build walls. And those wall break. Let’s patch them up with colorful plastic pieces. Life is serious, so that makes playing sometimes even more important.
