Visual Effects: 100 Years of Inspiration

In light of our previous post on what is likely to be the most special-effects laden movie yet, I found this most awesome montage that pays tribute to the films that have been dazzling audiences with groundbreaking special effects.

Intended as a into to a classroom lecture, Visual Effects: 100 Years of Inspiration takes a look at 26 notable visual effects films of the past century. Whilst it has skipped out the likes of Blade Runner, The Matrix, and Lord of the Rings, it goes a good job nonetheless. See it below.

Find the list of films referenced after the jump.

James Cameron’s “Avatar” Trailer

Apparently everyone is talking about Avatar. I obviously missed that memo. I really should fire my non-existent yet big bosomed secretary.

Written and directed by James Cameron (Terminator 2, Aliens, Titanic) Avatar has nothing in common with the animated series, “Avatar: The Last Airbender” – Cameron wrote the script a decade for the Nickelodeon show, and hence retained the right to use the word as his film’s title. After spending almost two full years in post-production, Avatar is supposedly one of the most technically sophisticated movies yet seen.

It sees a paraplegic war veteran (Sam Worthington) who gets shipped out to the planet of Pandora where the meddlesome humans at odds with the planet’s inhabitants, the long-limbed, elven-eared Na’vi race. See the epic trailer below or watch the special effects bonanza in HD at Apple Trailers.

Maybe it’s because I’m not drunk yet, but I feel a little underwhelmed. What do you think of it?

SA Runner Brushes Off Gender Row, Blazes to 800m Gold Medal

South African runner Caster Semenya won the 800m womens final at the IAAF World Championships last night, and convincingly so. She was over two seconds clear of the next runner, and her time is the best recorded in the world so far this year. Semenya experienced some controversy three weeks ago, when the IAAF requested her to undergo a gender test. After crossing the finish line last night, her gesture seemed to indicate what she thought of the matter – she crossed her arms and wiped the dirt of her shoulders. Jay Z would have been proud.

Due to the complexity of a gender verification test, the results would not be confirmed for several weeks, consequently the IAAF could not prevent Semenya from competing in last night’s final. It is, however, understood that South Africa came under some informal pressure to consider withdrawing Semenya from the race. Thankfully they stuck to their Glocks and let her run.

Several medical practitioners with titles ending in “ist” are performing further tests on the 18-year old from Polokwane. Doctors believe she could be suffering from a genetic disorder which means she has both male and female chromosomes. No word on when the results will be made public.

Quick Question: Can You See Our Gallery Images?

Just a quick question for our readers who happen to be using Firefox and the ad-blocking extension Adblock Plus: are you able to view the images in any of our galleries?

Here’s an example of what I’m talking about – in our recent Rare Stars Wars Photos post, we have included a gallery, but in some cases you might not be able to see it.

It’s through no fault of Adblock Plus – by itself it blocks nothing – it is however the subscription (or subscriptions) you have installed that does the filtering. It seems that the EasyList (USA) subscription is blocking 125 pixel by 125 pixel images, which happen to be the same size as the thumbnails we use in our galleries, hence the gallery is now shown.

If you are experiencing this problem, I’ve written a quick guide to resolve the problem. You can find it after the jump.

AWESOME Portal Baby Gear

One day when I’m a much older man, and I have kids, they’re going to look awesome. I’m going to pimp them out with geeky shirts from thinkgeek and skinny jeans. Before then though, I think I need to get them some of this goodness:

There’s actually a host of awesome clothing, including baby gear, over at Cafe Press. Have a look!

Most Disturbing “Rug” We’ve Ever Seen

My mouth seriously just hung open after I saw this. I almost felt like I had witnessed something evil. Apparently this is some sort of symbol that the designer has created to illustrate her relationship with her parents.

Now, that relationship looks to me like something you’d go to jail for, but hey, whatever floats your boat, eh?

Fishy Jewelry

I love sushi. Sushi is easily my favourite food, and if I could choose how I was going to die, I’d want to die in a bathtub filled with salmon roses.

This is taking it a bit far though. Seriously, sushi jewelry? Everyone around you is going to think that you got your ring in a R10 lucky packet.

Nevertheless, some people would actually buy this stuff, which is what’s fascinating…

OMG! What An Awesome Uncharted 2 Trailer

If you ever speak to a PS3 gamer and ask them about the fondest memory they’ve had, more often than not, they’ll tell you about their experience playing Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune. Developed by Naughty Dog and released exclusively on Playstation 3 in 2007, Uncharted featured stunning visuals, witty dialogue, a great musical score – the kind of high production values one would find in summer blockbuster films. Named PS3 Game of the Year (2007) by IGN, Uncharted has sold over 2.6 million copies worldwide.

And very soon, fortune hunter Nathan Drake will return in Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, being pulled back into the treacherous world of mercenary treasure hunters that he had sought to leave behind. Giving nothing of the story away, the latest trailer for Uncharted 2 shows what you can expect from this epic action-adventure title. Have a look, it’s awesome.

Uncharted 2: Among Thieves drops October 13th in the U.S. and October 23rd in Europe. You don’t want to miss this – sell your kidney (or preferably someone else’s) if you have. ;-)
