Play This: Civiballs 2

Oh goodie goodie, another chance to play with your balls. Similar to the last effort, Civiballs 2 takes you to Roman-, Viking- and Inca-inspired levels where you need to get your multicoloured balls into the similarly-coloured amphorae. Use your knife to cut the chains and release the balls.

Play Civiballs 2 at King.com.

Kitsune Noir’s Desktop Wallpaper Project

You can never have too many wallpapers. I was searching around for some today and happened upon Kitsune Noir, the blog of Bobby Solomon, a freelance web and graphic designer based in Los Angeles.

Every week, Solomon runs The Desktop Wallpaper Project where he features a new wallpaper from a different designer and makes it available for download. Have a look at some of the designs – click the images to go to the download pages.

And this is my personal favourite by illustrator and comic artist Mickey Duzyj.

See more at Kitsune Noir’s The Desktop Wallpaper Project.

Win Death Head Tees From a store!

Note: This competition has ended.

It’s been a while since our last t-shirt compo, but I’m glad to say we’re back with yet another wicked giveaway. This time it’s from our friends at the super-cool lifestyle store, a store. Born in 2004 in Cape Town, a store stocks a great selection of clothing, accessories, books, and music from local and internationally known brands.

They love products, they love brands, they love shopping. And we love giving funky stuff away, so it was just a matter of time before Onelargeprawn and a store got together. Anyways enough of this foreplay, let’s get down to the good stuff. We’ve got TWO Death Head t-shirts to give away to our loyal readers. If you’re picked as a winner you’ll have a choice of colour – BLACK or TEAL.

To stand a chance of winning this tee, send the answer to the following question to our competition mail box – win@onelargeprawn.co.za.

Question: Who are the three bad guys that make up the Death head design?

Hint: Head to www.astoreisgood.com and do some detective work. May the force be with you ;-)

This competition runs from September 4th to midnight September 12th 2009 and is only open to South African residents. Terms and conditions apply.

A massive shout out to our sponsor for donating the prizes. If you’d like to be exposed to a whole bunch of new good shit from a store, sign up for their newsletter. You can follow them on Twitter as well.

Mike Giant

I did not know this. And now I am enlightened. Born near sighted and colour blind, Mike Giant is now a celebrated tattooist, illustrator, and graffiti artist. A master of the black and white image, Giant draws inspiration (I almost wrote constipation, my bad.) from “cholo” life, Mexican folk art, and Japanese illustration. See some of his art below [NSFW].

Behold the sharpie power of Mike Giant after the jump.

Going Against The Grain: Jaco Haasbroek Does Z to A

We’ve featured the work of South african artist Jaco Haasbroek earlier (in case you missed it, click here), and it seems he has started a new project – to illustrate movie characters whose names start with a letter of the alphabet. This is what he has posted to his Flickr account.

Word has it that Jaco is looking for some suggestions from joe public. If you can think of some memorable movie characters to use, let us know in the comments and we’ll see if we can pass them onto him.

Update (December 9th): Ignore the above, the series is done and dusted. See them all on Jaco’s Facebook page.

And if you happen to like it, you can buy the prints – 250mm x 250mm, blockmounted, R250 excluding P&P. More on that here.

Slice and Dice: The “Ninja Assassin” Trailer

Frequent commenter and all-round awesome guy Macross dropped us a message to let us know about the gem that is Ninja Assassin. Far removed from Demon Dave and his judy chops, Ninja Assassin follow the story of Raizo (played by Korean actor, Rain), a child plucked from the streets and turned into one of the deadliest assassins in the world. Trained by a shadowy society, the Ozunu Clan, Raizo breaks free of them after witnessing them execution of his friend, vowing to take revenge upon the clan.

As you can imagine that is fodder for an action spectacular, and the Wachowski brothers (The Matrix trilogy) roped in director James McTeigue (V For Vendetta) to realise their vision of acrobatic ninjin’.

You have to keep the essence of the ninja movie,” McTeigue explained. “But if you want to take it above the usual kind of ninja movie, you need to give it a decent story. But make no mistake – it’s a ninja movie.

Watch the trailer for this ninja movie below or see it in HD at YouTube.

Ninja Assassin will be released in the US in November 2009, but it seems South African audiences may have to wait until January 2010 to see it. Let us know your thoughts on this and other general ninjin’ issues.

Wulffmorgenthaler

Mikael Wulff + Anders Morgenthaler = Wulffmorgenthaler. Maths can be fun. And so are the comics from this two gents. Started up in 2001, Wulffmorgenthaler delivers their humour in a single frame and feature characters such as Toucan Kid, Fucked-up Crazy-Ass Weirdo Beaver, Dick Bird, and a voyeur who “simply has to masturbate” to his neighbour’s wife and daughter. Europeans, they are a crazy bunch.

Here’s a small selection from Wulffmorgenthaler. Click to embiggen.

Are You A Digital Genius? Let’s Find Out!

The title says it all. In a new viral game from Hewlett Packard, Digital Genius asks you to complete a series of brain teasers to gauge your digital intelligence. At the end, you can compare your score to that of real members of Mensa who have also played the game.

It’s 15 minutes long and that’s 14 minutes more than my ADD-riddled mind can endure.

Play the game after the jump or head to HP Digital Genius. Drop us a comment with your score.

Good Design Expo 2009

The Japan Industrial Design Promotion Organization (JIDPO) hosts an annual event to showcase well-designed products. At the Good Design Expo this year, over 2000 products under consideration for the Good Design Awards were shown to the public. And the Pink Tentacle were in attendance to snap photos of the eye-catching designs.

This hourglass-shaped freshness label for meat products measures the amount of ammonia in the container and will change colour to indicate the meat has gone bad.

These beautiful lamp shades from Sony stores energy from sunlight during the day and use it to power the lamp at night.

These cute flash drives can be used as magnetic stickers when not slotted into the USB slot of your computer.

See more designs at Pink Tentacle. We’ll keep you updated with the winners when 1) we learn enough Japanese to navigate the Good Design Awards site or 2) the English part of the site gets updated.
