Techno Tuesday

Today has not been a great day. It started off with unadulterated excitement as I contemplated playing Uncharted 2: Among Thieves tonight, but those happy thoughts soon turned to disappointment when I found out a shipping delay by a certain distributor would result in me only picking up my copy tomorrow. Now I’m completely apathetic about the situation. I guess that’s a good indication of how my feelings are so easily ruled by modern technology.

Graphic designer/illustrator Andy Rementer knows a thing or two about the influence of technology on our world, and in his Techno Tuesday comic, he takes a funny look at that. See some of comics after the jump.

The Expendables: Semper Fight

After the release of a bootleg trailer a month back, a new (extended) promo trailer for “The Expendables” has just surfaced. Penned and directed by Sylvester Stallone, it stars the man himself, along with memorable action heroes Dolph Lundgren, Eric Roberts, Mickey Rourke, Jason Statham, and Jet Li.

I was expecting to see gratuitous violence akin to Stallone’s 2008 effort “Rambo” where his actions resulted in 236 lives coming to an end (that’s 2.59 people a minute according to the stats) but I was pleasantly surprised to find what could be the makings of a cheesy ’80s action-thriller. Have a look at the 3-minute trailer below and let us know what you think of it.

Bruce Willis and Arnold Schwarzenegger are expected to take part. The explosion fest is set to hit U.S. theatres on August 20th, 2010.

[thanks to Macross for the tip]

….and here’s the official trailer (keep an eye out for the cameos).

Rio 2016: Live Your Passion

Whilst Obama and his adopted hometown Chicago are liking their wounds from the IOC brush-off, Rio de Janeiro celebrates their successful campaign to host the XXXI Summer Olympics in 2016. The resounding win also makes Brazil the first South American country to host the Olympic Games.

This promotional video shows the amazing landscape and vibrant culture that Rio has to offer to its visitors.

Incidentally, Rio topped Forbes list of the world’s happiest cities. And in case you’re worried about the crime (or public safety challenges as it is called), be assured that SWAT teams are invading the favelas as we speak ;-)

Lost Characters, Simpsonized

Dean Fraser is an artist with an interesting side project, where he draws all kinds of characters from TV shows and movies as if they were on the Simpsons. In his “Lost Week” series that he started back in May, Fraser drew one Simpsonized Lost character a day, for seven days. Have a look at some of them after the jump.

Super Slo-Mo Bullet Impacts

I think it’s safe to say we know the damage that bullets can do to people and object. German engineer Werner Mehl possesses a camera system is able to track the flight of a bullet at a whopping 1 million frames per second, and doing what any man with the possession of such equipment does, he created this 10-minute clip showing the impact of bullets on different targets – before you get too excited, no people were harmed in the making of the video. It is quite beautiful, pity about the ridiculously huge watermark right in the middle of everything.

Marc Quinn: Blood face

Well technically blood head. I first heard about British sculptor Marc Quinn when he revealed Sphinx (a sculpture of Kate Moss in a yoga pose) in 2007. I wasn’t that impressed to tell you the truth. Anyway, today I was browsing Neatorama and I saw Quinn’s signature piece, which quite literally blew me away. The work is entitled Self and is made entirely from 4.5 litres of his own blood which has been frozen in a mould of his head. It’s definitely gruesome and perhaps even nauseating for some, but it’s also so human that it’s strangely alluring.

The delicate frost crystals gathered on the “skin” and the underlying deep scarlet of the frozen blood almost make me want to lick it. Eeew can’t believe I just wrote that, but it’s true. Self is an on going project, Quinn makes another blood cast of his head every five years which will result in a unique and visceral record of the artist aging.

For those who find this work a little over the top but totally cool, you can see more of Quinn’s works which include giant pieces of pop corn, beautiful plants frozen forever in liquid silicone, enormous orchids, and a huge sculpture of Darth Vader’s head at FACTUM ARTE.

Cartoon Sexy: Marge Simpson poses for Playboy

To celebrate the 20th season of the Simpsons, devoted wife, loving mother and island of calm in a family-sized crazy storm, Marge Simpson is about to do something no cartoon character has ever done. The sweet, husky-voiced lady with her signature towering blue hairdo will be gracing the cover of Playboy magazine. Marge will also appear in her own spread where her modesty will be tastefully preserved by some cartoon lingerie. I don’t know about you, but I think it’s cool. Sure Marge is a mother, and a house wife, but who says those things make a woman unsexy?

Playboy CEO Scott Flanders, has said that he is hoping that featuring Marge will attract younger readers (those in their 20s) to the magazine. Only time will tell if this works. See the cover after the jump.

Graffiti Analysis 2.0: Visualizing Tags in 3D

Evan Roth is the co-founder of Graffiti Research Lab. Inspired by his thesis project, Graffiti Taxonomy, Roth got together with like-minded artist Chris Sugrue to create an application that captures graffiti tags (or any drawing for that matter), and then generates a 3D visualization. Complete with particle effects, the animations look quite beautiful – have a look at the videos after the jump.
