Competition Reminder: Win Red Dead Goodies & Wild West DVDs

NOTE: This competition has ended, sorry.

I can’t recall being this excited for a game since Uncharted and Grand Theft Auto IV. Rockstar’s critically acclaimed Red Dead Redemption gets released in South Africa today. It was a bumpy road on the way here as the stock got unceremoniously bumped off flights from Europe due to the ash from that inconvenient Icelandic volcano. I’ve ordered mine through local online retailer Kalahari.net and they’ve been sacrificing all manner of organic material to the gods to ensure their customers get the game on time. Whilst I wait for my copy to arrive, I just wanted to remind you about our latest competition.

We’re giving away some cool Red Dead Redemption merchandise and a set of great westerns on DVD. The contents of the hamper are:

  • A Red Dead Redemption t-shirt
  • A Red Dead Redemption sticker
  • A bar of eradication soap
  • The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly
  • The Outlaw Josey Wales
  • Unforgiven
  • Young Guns

To stand a chance of winning the hamper, you need to solve our wild west inspired crossword puzzle. The competition ends next week on Thursday, May 27th. You can find the full details on the official competition post. Good luck!

The Typical Lives of Animals Told in Pie Charts

A typical day in my life is hardly the stuff of legends, in fact I spend most of my time trying to look for things I had just a moment ago. Judging from our lives of our pets, I do think animals have a far more pleasurable time of it. The cats teeter between ignoring our existence and demanding food. The dogs are spend the majority of the time barking at absolutely nothing and trying to eat petrified cat faeces. It’d be disgusting if they didn’t look so sweet. But I digress.

Jeff Wysaski over at Pleated-Jeans likes pie charts, not only are they great visual aids they also makes one feel like they’re being productive. He has created pie-charts to illustrate how five wild animals spend their time on a typical day. They’re quite cute, have a look at them after the jump.

Wonderfully Retro LOST Posters

You may recall Albert Exergian’s minimal poster for the hit TV series, LOST. If you liked that, then you might enjoy the silk-screened posters by designer Ty Mattson.

Earlier on this year Mattson, a huge fan of the series, sat down to design an invite to a season six premiere party at his house, and ended up creating eight different LOST posters. From enigmatic John Locke to the quintessential eye scenes, his posters are wonderfully retro. See them out after the jump.

Hilarious Newspaper Headlines

I’ve heard that proof-reading is a thankless job. I’m sure that proof-readers and subs on newspapers sometimes just can’t resist slipping a sly and amusing mistake into copy.  Other times of course these “slip-ups” are the result of a lazy incompetent twit. Well, intentional or not, these typos are funny nonetheless.

Awesome Concertina Paper Structures

We really like the organic origami from maths professor Goran Konjevod. We’re also drawn to obscure names, and that brought our attention to the art of Elod Beregszasz or elodole as he is known on Flickr.

Elod is quite simply in love with paper. He loves to cut it / fold it / tear it / emboss it / sculpt it. He’s also single. After the jump we take an in-depth look at his cut and fold concertina paper sculptures, and by in-depth we mean nothing but photos. ;-)

Eyjafjallajokull in Beautiful Time-Lapse

You may (should) remember the volcanic eruptions at Eyjafjallajökull (pronunciation) last month. As it spewed out plumes of ash, air travel was disrupted across Europe – this visualization shows that quite well.

Not happy with the mediocre shots he had seen, photographer Sean Stiegemeier travelled to Iceland to see whether he could take better ones. After four days of travel and a further four days of bad weather, he managed to get a day-and-a-half worth of footage using his trusty Canon 5D Mark II. His beautiful time-lapse video is accompanied by the music of Icelandic musician Jónsi. Check it out below.

The 2010 Vader Project

Darth Vader is a likable chap. He is romantic, can rap, and even gives good directions. Since 2007, artists have been paying tribute to the iconic sith lord by customizing a 1:1 scale replica of the actual Darth Vader helmet used in the Star Wars films.

It’s called The Vader Project and this year 100 notable artists were asked to re-imagine the Darth Vader helmet in their own styles. The results are eclectic to say the least. Have a look at a few of the designs after the jump.

Lucy Furr’s Friday Smackdown

Hey Kids what’s new?  As you might have guessed, I’m not one of those conscientious bloggers who preps their posts in advance. You can be sure that anything I post was completed split seconds before it appears. Anyway I’ve had a crazy day and hence my Friday Smackdown is later than usual (and it’s usually late).

In addition to my crazy day, my week was pretty horrible too. On a scale of 1 to OMFG it’s a shit tornado, it was about a “it’s raining big fat steaming cow pats” week. In the moments when I wasn’t weeping in the bathroom or biting my nails to the quick or swearing at all and sundry, I was thinking about how great it would be to be a bad guy. Now I’m not talking about some pissy twit who tries and fails to get the better of John McClane, or bland old Agent Smith. I’m talking about the real thing, the real old school kind of bad guy. Two particularly crazy mofo’s came to mind – Tony Montana and Travis Bickle.

This bad guy ROCKS

This bad guy ROCKS

Yes you did see right. Your beady little peepers aren’t deceiving you and you haven’t had too much to drink already. It was way too hard for me to choose between the two. I know I said last time that I would choose no matter what, but I guess I lied and I just don’t care. In my fragile state  I couldn’t think of a single sucky thing about either of them, and also I wanted to be a combination of both of them.

Travis and Tony are both so awesomely bad in their own way. At one point I was seriously leaning towards Travis because he so sincerely believes he’s doing the right thing, and because he eats corn flakes with hard tack, and because he has the wickedest hair style. But then I remembered the cocaine, and the fuck-off big guns and the kick-ass things Tony Montana said and I just couldn’t make my mind up. If you, Dear Reader can convince me that one of these bad asses is badder than the other, I’ll reconsider the draw. So what say you?
